The work: Cynthia Howard, This Too Shall Pass, 2022. Oil on panel, 60cm diameter.

Cynthia Howard’s This Too Shall Pass is a whimsical exploration of the relationship between our internal psyche and the physical human experience. As the realistically painted figure tumbles in cyclecar continuum, her metaphysical self responds to the tribulations of the world around her, protected by a stealth outer flesh that remains steadfast in its physicality. The artist adopts a palpable surrealist quality, depicted through a dream-like composition and exploration of the conscience.

Sophie Vander, Director, Curatorial+Co., Sydney

Around and around we go: in our bodies, out of our bodies; in and out of moments; sinking and flying. Life. Cynthia has cleverly used a circular substrate and composition to echo this phenomena with a striking amount of detail for this scale, telling her story with line, form, motion and changing moods through her use of colour tonality that goes from dark to serene.
