Artist Statement
For me, art is a search for meaning, truth, and transformation. My process is deeply rooted in visions, meditations, and introspection, blending recovered materials, personal writings, and gestural markings. I interweave traditional brush techniques with my fingers and hands, leaving raw, unfiltered traces on the canvas. This theme of transformation and renewal comes to life in my latest exhibition, Awakening. Each piece, from Just Breathe to Word of Knowledge, is part of my personal journey—artworks that express my seeking, questioning, and discovering. In Megiddo Valley, the sweeping landscape captures the tension and eventual calm I find in deep inner exploration. Pieces like Second Heaven and The Deep are layered with complexity, reflecting the mystery and beauty of the human experience. Whether it’s the serene stillness of Know Peace or the intensity of Mountain Walk East, each artwork tells a story of growth, resilience, and purpose. Titles like Coming Into View, Overflow, Encounter point to a journey that is still unfolding, inviting viewers to reflect on their own path. I embrace the imperfections of my process, much like how life shapes us—each flaw building a valuable foundation, creating a patina that leads to something more aligned and complete.
Chalom
CHALOM. AKA Mike Lane
In scripture it says that : "To him that overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows saving he that receives it."
So, the Phillip Island based mark-maker asked God to tell him his secret name and the name CHALOM was spoken to him in a dream. It is a Hebrew word meaning "Dreamer".
The artist’s practice consists of visually expressing dreams and meditations, where he layers written blessings, prophecies and scriptures with mostly found or recovered materials and media, embedded bible pages, pencilled notes and gestural strokes with oil sticks, spray paint and carpenters pencils. Beyond the haphazard backgrounds, brushes or tools are rarely used, just hands and fingers employing scrawly texts, scribbles, abstract and vaguely figurative forms and motifs.
CHALOM’s prolific work is a deeply spiritual practice, and he loves to write blessings and prophecies, hidden in under-paintings for the viewer to experience as mysteries and positive energetic flow, intended to shift the atmosphere in the spaces where the works are hung.
