Sitting somewhere between the constraints of realism and the purely instinctive, unconscious freedom of abstraction, Four Figures by Anthony Griffis displays the type of honesty only found in those unafraid of imperfection. Free from clean edges and defined purely by colour and shape, Griffis paints with the conviction to stop just short of the finish line, demonstrating the artist’s unabashed confidence in painting the female form.

Anthony’s painterly use of light-to-dark values and minimal palette are applied direct to the surface with a visceral intention rather than bogging it down in technical details. There is a raw, unspoken sense of comradery between this group of women. It evokes questions. Who are they? What is their connection? They appear unabashedly nude, patient and posing for the artist to capture them in this intimate moment.
