Artist Statement

"Morning Walks on the Beach" captures the tranquil charm of the Mornington Peninsula foreshore, drawing from our leisurely strolls on the pier. Echoing the rhythmic motion of pale turquoise waters and aged boardwalk timber, the artwork nostalgically recalls these serene moments by the shore.

My artwork draws from both my architectural background and the beauty of the natural world. This convergence of the man-made and the organic manifests in my work through clean lines and pure geometries intertwined with rough tactile textures and subtle colour schemes.

I'm fascinated by the fractal patterns found in nature, where apparent chaos unveils intricate mathematical precision upon closer inspection. Within this geometric framework, I strive to encapsulate the serene tranquility experienced when immersed in nature's beauty. Colour plays a pivotal role in achieving this; I am particularly drawn to muted tonal schemes found in nature for their ability to bring harmony and serenity to compositions.

My artistic journey is characterised by an ongoing pursuit of discovery and creative expression. I embrace experimentation and enjoy exploring diverse mediums and materials. Always seeking new ways to imbue my work with texture and layered depth, I draw inspiration from documenting beautiful and unusual textures encountered in nature, which often inform the textures in my art.

About the artist

Thomas Gouws

Thomas is a Brisbane-based abstract artist with roots in South Africa. Graduating with a degree in architecture from the University of Pretoria in 1996, he embarked on his architectural journey, establishing his own practice in 2002. Alongside his wife Sureen, an interior architect who later joined the practice, they collaborated on numerous award-winning projects.

In 2018, they relocated to Australia with their two young daughters, spending four years on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula before settling in Brisbane.

Art has been a lifelong passion for Thomas, and he has explored painting and sculpture alongside his architectural career over the years. Upon relocating to Australia, he decided to immerse himself fully in his art, taking a hiatus from architecture. His artistic creations are deeply influenced by his architectural background, blending elements of both disciplines. Despite recently returning to architecture, Thomas remains committed to his art practice, with aspirations to establish a dual career in both architecture and art.
