Artist Statement
The land here is man-made, imitating what we believe to be true, colour plays an important role in the final interpretation.
My artwork draws energy and inspiration from the land in its many interpreting forms, the layers of impasto and graffiti-like marks are evident within my mixed media palette which at times comprises of acrylics, collage, aerosol, gouache, ink and graphite. Artists such as William De Kooning, CY Twombly and Aida Tomescu have inspired my changing style. The process of mark-making became my focus when I joined the New York Studio School of Drawing Painting and Sculpture in Soho under my mentor, Graham Nickson. The vocabulary of drawing crossed the boundaries of painting which enabled my personal style to broaden through unorthodox tools and exercises, as a result, my process became intuitive in its approach. I break down what I see in order to reveal the soul of my work, I then attempt to capture the colours of the emotions I feel in the fleeting moments of creating.
