Frances Hansen

Frances Hansen is a practising visual artist with a background in Tertiary Education, lecturing in Painting, Drawing and Art Theory. Hansen holds a BVA from NSW School of Art and Design, (previously COFA) and a MFA, (first class honours) from Elam school of Fine Art, Auckland NZ. Her practice sits within contemporary painting and experimental drawing.

Hansen has worked on many commissions, involving murals, art work and design for cafes in Auckland, NZ. Her book Keepsakes, published by Hardie Grant, 2011, showcases an eclectic approach to image making. Hansen has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout her career.

Most recently Hansen has been selected as a finalist for the Paddington Art Prize, the Mosman Art Prize, the Adelaide Perry Drawing Award, the Milburn Art Prize and the Kedumba Drawing Award.

Currently working out of studios in Sydney and the South Coast, Hansen's focus responds to familiar surrounding coastal landscapes of local beaches, the bush and road trips further afield. Her work comprises of a mixture of non representational and abstract imagery, with occasional figurative elements emerging. Hansen's work is held in numerous collections including University of Auckland, City Art Institute, Manukau Institute of technology, James Wallace Art Collection.
