Collection: Ides Of Spring – Solo Exhibition by Chalom

Creating art is an unending exploration for Chalom. It is akin to the quest of an alchemist - striving to transform ordinary elements into something radiant, valuable, and alluring. As it is with his latest exhibition, Ides of Spring.

You can experience the transformation and discovery in this new body of work; encapsulating a fervour of emotions, thoughts, and personal depth and spirit; creating a calming space amidst life's chaos for recovery, existence, and the natural rhythm of life.

These works I present to you are a chronicle of my journey of asking, seeking, knocking, praying for the Rain of the Spirit ; and a prophecy of the abundance of the final Spring, ushering in the ecstasy of Summer. And so the cycle continues.

Chalom nurtures his passion and strives for authentic expression in his work - fleeting experiences that are sometimes fast-paced or sometimes prolonged. And just like paint contributes to a masterpiece despite its imperfections, every experience forms a valuable foundation for future growth.

I find it vital to nurture my calling and find pure expression of it in my work. Sometimes I achieve that goal, other times not so much. Paint though, is like Grace. All the imperfect expressions form a valuable foundation and patina for that which is more aligned with the overlay of the better.

CHALOM. AKA Mike Lane

In scripture it says that : "To him that overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows saving he that receives it."

So, the Phillip Island based mark-maker asked God to tell him his secret name and the name CHALOM was spoken to him in a dream. It is a Hebrew word meaning "Dreamer".

The artist’s practice consists of visually expressing dreams and meditations, where he layers written blessings, prophecies and scriptures with mostly found or recovered materials and media, embedded bible pages, pencilled notes and gestural strokes with oil sticks, spray paint and carpenters pencils. Beyond the haphazard backgrounds, brushes or tools are rarely used, just hands and fingers employing scrawly texts, scribbles, abstract and vaguely figurative forms and motifs.

CHALOM’s prolific work is a deeply spiritual practice, and he loves to write blessings and prophecies, hidden in under-paintings for the viewer to experience as mysteries and positive energetic flow, intended to shift the atmosphere in the spaces where the works are hung.
