Artist Statement
My intuitive art practice is centred on an organic process that allows mark-making, gesture, and colour to make its path on the canvas. The artworks are abstract, with a palette that leans towards softer, feminine colours. These hues create a calming and delicate atmosphere, inviting the viewer to explore the subtle emotions conveyed through each piece. The paintings have a delicacy and fragility with an underlying strength evocative of my journey in life. They reveal how I have finally begun to allow myself to express myself, ignoring the fear of making space and pushing boundaries. Creating art is a personal journey. Sometimes, the process can be quite simple, with an easy flow. Other times, the paintings require layers upon layers until I feel satisfied. As I work, I’m drawn to colours that play together as I experiment. Likewise, mark-making has a significant role in my process. I play holding the brush in different ways or apply the paint differently to see what marks I come up with and work from there. I primarily work with acrylics, which gives me the flexibility to layer and build texture, but I also turn to oil pastels for their rich, creamy consistency and the tactile quality they bring to my art. This combination of materials and evolving colour schemes helps me to create pieces that are both visually engaging and conceptually resonant, offering viewers a space to reflect and connect with the abstract forms and emotions present in my paintings. Feeling plays a role in my work and how it turns out. I always paint with music, and songs connect with the feelings I am putting out onto the canvas. Recently, I've started experimenting with bolder colours and incorporating more texture, which adds a dynamic contrast and depth to my work. This exploration allows me to express a broader range of feelings and narratives, sometimes within the same piece.
Ree Hodges
Ree Hodges is a visual artist based in the coastal town of Newcastle, NSW, where she lives with her husband, two kids, and three dogs.
From an early age, Ree was drawn to the allure of art, quietly observing the world around her and immersing herself in its expressions. Though initially reserved, her passion for creativity served as a silent catalyst, guiding her on a journey of self-discovery.
Infused with a soft aesthetic, Ree's paintings evoke a sense of serenity and beauty, inviting viewers into a place of tranquillity and introspection. While her repertoire predominantly comprises gentle abstract pieces, an evolution towards more adventurous experimentation with bolder colours, contrast, and defined contours has been a welcoming one. It’s here she uncovers a harmonious balance of delicacy and fragility with an underlying strength.
Ree's creative process is an exploration of colour, a symphony of hues drawn from the rich tapestry of everyday life. Whether inspired by the delicate shades of dawn's first light, the raw emotion of personal experiences, or the rhythms of music, each stroke of her brush serves as a testament to the boundless beauty found in the world around us.
