Artist Statement

Gentle Nature reflects the way I see the world and, in many ways, a reflection of myself. I've always been drawn to the quiet things — the wind moving through trees, light shifting across the landscape, and the feeling of stepping outside my small garden studio and taking a breath.

This collection brings together my love of nature and my need to find space for myself amid the pace of life and motherhood. In the studio, I've been allowing the paintings to move more freely, catching the light, softening at the edges and following the flow of each mark. Layers of acrylic paint and expressive oil stick linework create a gentle interplay of movement, colour and stillness.

There is a softness to these works, but also energy and strength. For me, Gentle Nature is about embracing both — allowing things to be quiet, imperfect and a little untamed.

I hope these paintings offer a moment to pause and breathe, and that something within them feels familiar to you.

About the artist

Dalin Alejandrino

Dalin Alejandrino is a Khmer-Australian abstract artist based on Gadigal and Wangal Land (Sydney, NSW, Australia). Her practice explores belonging, heritage, motherhood, and our connection to land and water.

Working primarily with acrylic and oil sticks, Alejandrino creates ethereal expressionism through layered colour, subtle textures and gestural mark-making. Her paintings move between inner and outer worlds, where each layer becomes a memory and each mark an emotional response to the world around her.

As the daughter of Cambodian refugees, Alejandrino (née Vann) migrated to Australia in 1987 after her early childhood life in a refugee camp along the border of Thailand and Cambodia. She draws inspiration from her motherland, family and the experience of belonging between places. Her work reflects the in-between — home and estrangement, nature and nurture, past and beauty of the present.

Through an expressive and intuitive process, Alejandrino's artworks invite us to pause, feel and reconnect with the quiet wonder held within landscape and everyday life. The whimsical brushwork and gentle layers evoke a deep search for ancestral healing and spiritual renewal.

Alejandrino is a self-represented artist and has exhibited with SIBU Gallery (Australia) and Michael Reid Northern Beaches and Southern Highlands (Australia). She has been a finalist in the Fisher's Ghost Art Award 2024 contemporary category, and her works are held in private collections across Australia, North America, United Kingdom, and Singapore.
