Artist Statement

This artwork is part of the "Abstract Tablescapes" - romancing the joy of life, collection.

Based on the backdrop of the beautiful Mornington Peninsula (VIC), I am a self-taught contemporary expressionist, with my creativity attributed to immersion in many artistic experiences since childhood. Frequenting the opera and live theatre enriched my imagination and desire to express. My need to paint comes from wanting to truly immerse in all life’s emotions, within a full and meaningful life. Sharing this with others and evoking a palpable response, is my passion.

Personally described as “Joie de Vivre” (joy of life), this also aptly describes my art which is lively, exuberant and emotive. With a penchant for acrylic paints on canvas, I also incorporate mixed media with the use of impasto and oil sticks. Through this exhibition I have gleefully delved into exploring the genre of still life through non-representational forms, using bold colours, ambiguous shapes and strong textures. I feel it is an evolution of self, moving towards positive and happy times, where life is light and joy abundant. Themes of emotion, identity, play and place are explored.

Vanessa is an abstract expressionist based on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, where she lives near the beach with her spoodle Milly. Vanessa’s medium of choice is acrylic paints, but she also leans towards mixed media with the use of impasto, spray and oil stick. She is a self taught artist, who has always had a creative drive, thanking her parents for immersion in many artistic experiences since childhood. Vanessa’s ‘Joie de Vivre’ is evident in all her artworks, as she strives to share beauty, while evoking a passionate response. Her message is one of strength, resilience, joy and boldly embracing life.
