Artist Statement

This current body of work is based around the ideas of greeting cards, the old fashioned Hallmark card. Sympathy cards, get well messages, thinking of you messages. The original cards follow a bit of a formula, they have edges, borders, floral images, sometimes embossed flourishes, curlicues, fancy corners, repetitive patterns presented in differing scales. I borrow from all these design elements and mix them up to make something new. Alongside this I include a freshness of oceanic air and hints of bush colour, hoping to create a spaciousness and generosity of spirit that might have been the intention of the sender.

I currently work from two studios, alternating between Sydney and the South Coast, this gives me a rich experience of constantly re-seeing my environments and therefore my work through fresh eyes.

My practice continually evolves as I respond to internal and external landscapes. Primarily my interest lies in paint, a wide variety of liquid stuff applied to reasonably static surfaces. Brush marks, fluidity, gestural marks, colour, tone, transparency, layers, opaqueness, opposites, dark / light, thick / thin, clear / muddy.

Oftentimes my practice is simply responding to marks made and then more marks made in response. However, underlying conceptual thinking is always guiding my decisions about what I am actually putting on and removing from the surface.

A wall in my studio demonstrates a wide range of collected and ever-changing visual material giving comprehensive clues into what I am thinking about and being inspired by.

About the artist

Frances Hansen

Frances Hansen is a practising visual artist with a background in Tertiary Education, lecturing in Painting, Drawing and Art Theory. Hansen holds a BVA from NSW School of Art and Design, (previously COFA) and a MFA, (first class honours) from Elam school of Fine Art, Auckland NZ. Her practice sits within contemporary painting and experimental drawing.

Hansen has worked on many commissions, involving murals, art work and design for cafes in Auckland, NZ. Her book Keepsakes, published by Hardie Grant, 2011, showcases an eclectic approach to image making. Hansen has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout her career.

Most recently Hansen has been selected as a finalist for the Paddington Art Prize, the Mosman Art Prize, the Adelaide Perry Drawing Award, the Milburn Art Prize and the Kedumba Drawing Award.

Currently working out of studios in Sydney and the South Coast, Hansen's focus responds to familiar surrounding coastal landscapes of local beaches, the bush and road trips further afield. Her work comprises of a mixture of non representational and abstract imagery, with occasional figurative elements emerging. Hansen's work is held in numerous collections including University of Auckland, City Art Institute, Manukau Institute of technology, James Wallace Art Collection.
