PAINTING

Alizon Gray creates layered abstract paintings built from gesture and mark making — dots, veils, opaque masks — many concealed before resolution. What remains holds a quiet tension between what is hidden and what is seen. Works held in collections across Australia, the US, Europe, and Asia.

Artist Statement

Alizon Gray takes an explorative approach to painting through gesture and mark making to create harmonious and meditative abstract works. Gray's paintings are layered, built from multitudes of marks: dots, squiggles, shapes, transparent veils, and opaque masks.

Many of the marks end up being painted out, either partially or in full. In some instances Gray is erasing what she perceives as mistakes; other times she keeps them. Often there are elements in a work that are resolved but don't work within the painting as a whole and need to be painted out – always a challenge for the artist as she 'kills her darlings'.

However, what remains when Gray's paintings reach resolution are works that hold an interesting tension between the marks that are concealed and what the audience is allowed to see. Before the final layers are added Gray's paintings sit in flux and are unsettled, however, what we are left to engage with are works that are balanced and quietly reflective.
