Artist Statement
My memories of landscape are very strong. A childhood spent in a village surrounded by hills and a river outside Guangzhou in China, a lifetime spent in Australia. I have grown to love the Australian outback, making many visits to the Flinders Ranges, the, Pilbara, the MacDonnell Ranges, Fowlers Gap and Arkaroola connecting with these landscapes. I have been living in Wollombi for the past three years surrounded by the bush, by distant hills, the valley and its little stream. I feel I know this land so well. Subtle changes are always present with early morning and evening light, with shadows, with winter frosts and bleaching summer sun, with rainstorms and swirling destructive winds. I walk daily through this landscape often making quick sketches to capture these subtle elements, then return to the studio where I can meld them into my current work. My paintings evolve from my imagination and memories, from conversations I have had with the land and my emotional attachment to its colours, shapes and spaces.
