Artist Statement
"Around the Bays” explores the concept of attachment to place, with the bay serving as a symbol of refuge and security. Its sheltered curves offer both protection and connection to the surrounding landscape, evoking feelings of nostalgia and belonging. This sense of emotional anchoring is mirrored in the interplay between natural forms and weathered architecture, highlighting how environments shape and reflect our inner worlds.
Drawing on the theory of prospect and refuge, the piece speaks to the human need for spaces that provide both expansive views and a sense of shelter. “Around the Bays” invites viewers to contemplate the enduring relationship between architecture and nature, where time and change create a subtle, harmonious dialogue.
Drawing from my background in architecture, I use light, form, and colour to create layered, evocative landscapes. By abstracting the landscape with subtle and simple forms, horizontal lines, and layers of colour, I evoke the design process of architecture. I approach the landscape as a multi-dimensional space, thinking in terms of plans, sections, elevations, and perspectives. My work challenges not just how we perceive landscapes, but how our identity is intricately tied to the spaces we occupy. These paintings are quiet meditations on the convergence of architecture and the natural world, with the intention being to encourage further contemplation of our place in—and impact on—the world around us.

About the artist
Kelly Rowe
Kelly Rowe is a contemporary landscape artist based in Auckland, New Zealand, whose work seamlessly blends architecture, design, and fine art. With a background in architecture and interior design experience in Sydney and London, Kelly offers a nuanced perspective on landscapes, delving into the connections between human emotion, place, and identity.
Her paintings manifest as quiet meditations on the intersection of architecture and the natural world, rural and urban. They embody a dynamic interplay between personal reflection, isolation versus community, and the complex psychological relationship individuals form with their environments. Drawing on principles of environmental psychology, her work invites viewers to explore the emotional resonance of place—how the spaces we inhabit shape and reflect our inner worlds.
Kelly’s work evokes the precision and romanticism of hand-drawn architectural sketches, with a contemporary lens. Her landscapes feature sweeping horizontal lines, punctuated by vertical interruptions that convey depth, elevation, and a nuanced dialogue between light, colour, and form.
