Artist Statement
My work is rooted in abstraction as a way of exploring emotion, memory, and the unseen. I approach each painting as a process—an unfolding rather than a plan—where layers of mark-making, texture, and gesture form a layered visual language. I'm not aiming to illustrate an idea but to allow something intuitive to emerge. Living in Newcastle for over a decade, I've been deeply influenced by the coastal environment—its shifting light, rough edges, and quiet expanses. These surroundings feed into my work, not literally but through mood and movement. I'm equally drawn to sound, rhythm, and the imperfections of the everyday, which often echo in the surfaces and structures I create. Painting is for me a form of meditation and dreaming. It's a space where I can drift between thought and feeling, presence and memory. I often begin with no fixed outcome, allowing spontaneity to guide me before stepping back to make more deliberate, responsive choices. This balance between freedom and restraint is central to my process. After many years of painting privately, I'm now re-entering the public side of the practice, sharing work, reconnecting with audiences, and opening new conversations. My artistic aim is not to provide answers but to offer a space for reflection and invigoration—something positively felt more than fully understood.

About the artist
Jonathan Osmond
Jonathan Osmond is a 43-year-old abstract painter currently living and working in Newcastle, NSW, where he has been based for the past 13 years. Originally from the UK, his practice began during A-Level studies at Peter Symonds College, where he participated in group exhibitions and received formal recognition for his work.
In the late 1990s he held a series of solo exhibitions in Winchester at a student-run gallery, The Corner House Bar, and The Black Boy Pub, each offering a raw and unfiltered space to engage with the public. He also exhibited in a group show at Winchester School of Art, deepening his exploration of abstraction within a more academic context.
Working primarily in acrylics and mixed media, his paintings are process-driven explorations of memory, energy, and internal landscape. Influenced by sound, atmosphere, and the imperfections of lived experience, his work blends instinctive gesture with layered texture to create compositions that feel both raw and resolved.
Developed by Newcastle living, his work is shaped by coastal textures, soundscapes, and lived memory. Each piece is a balance between spontaneity and control, an invitation into a more meditative space of imagination and dreaming. After years of private practice, he is now reconnecting with the public side of art, returning to exhibition, collaboration, and creative dialogue through abstract painting.
