Artist Statement
I create art as a way of gifting myself acceptance, of working through the experiences I’ve had as a mum and as a woman to arrive at a place of saying: yes I am enough. So what I am looking at are feelings of freedom, of exploring innate identity versus socially constructed identity versus familial identity and I’m saying to the viewer I validate you, I see you and in some capacity I understand you. We have shared experiences therefore we have a shared story. And that’s all I can really ever hope for as an artist. To see and be seen.
Sarana Haeata
Sarana Haeata is a Maori-Australian artist who resides in Fremantle, West Australia. From her seaside studio, Sarana explores the beauty and nuances held in shared stories, collective and individual identity, with a particular focus on the female experience. Heavily influenced by the joy and challenge of motherhood, her work, which is often imbued with a sense of surrender and freedom, spans across painting, digital media, ceramics, and public art.
Her work explores internal landscapes through gestural brush strokes, iconography, and written word. Sarana cites her colour palettes as the most prominent emotional vehicle, using colour to instil calm or a sense of rich, enveloping wonder. Sarana’s artworks are visual acceptance letters, holding the viewer in a moment of belonging.
Recently, Sarana has been commissioned by The Gardener Museum in collaboration with The Boston Globe and has exhibited in Miami and San Francisco, with her first solo show selling out in Sydney last year. Her works reside in the private collections of Randi Zuckerberg and Sarah Harden (CEO of Hello Sunshine production company), with works in private collections across the US, Australia, Copenhagen, France, and Hong Kong.
