Artist Statement
My artistic practice is inspired by the beautiful forms of nature, particularly within the coastal environment. I work with natural fibres including silk, merino, alpaca, angora and flax, that have a distinct palette of crimps and curls of varying lengths, lustre and softness. I layer these different textures and hues to illuminate forms and perspectives—evoking a sense of elegance and calm akin to the one I see and feel in the natural world. My life by the ocean influences my style, which I describe as ‘Ocean Botanical’. The softness of a flower petal and the glistening ocean on a clear sky day emanate the same inner beauty that I’m looking for when creating a piece of art. I love the transformational nature of felting and using traditional techniques to produce contemporary art. During the felting process, multiple layers of loose fibre, placed by hand, become connected to create a unique textile. Every fibre has its place. When I’ve found balance and beauty, I know it’s complete.
Susie Hughes
Susie Hughes is a fibre textile artist working from her home studio in Crescent Head, Australia, where she lives with her husband. She creates hand-felted artworks using natural, ethically sourced fibres, including silk, merino, alpaca, angora, and flax, which she sources from small farms in Australia and abroad. She draws inspiration from her love of the ocean, with surfing, sailing and meditation an integral part of her lifestyle. Susie aims to capture the inner beauty of the natural environment. By layering different textures and tones and merging forms from different perspectives, she creates artworks that convey a sense of calm, warmth and softness in their architectural spaces.
Susie spent 17 years teaching art and textiles to children in Byron Bay, Sydney and Bali, privately and in schools that integrated art and creativity into the learning process. During this time, she continued her artistic development across a range of mediums through workshops and working with mentors. Following her passion for textiles, Susie now focuses solely on creating contemporary textile art using felting techniques.
She currently works part-time in the field of human rights, and alongside creating art, spends her spare time enjoying life by the ocean.
