Artist Statement
Nature is my muse. Inspired by texture and colour in the world, especially the patina of time, my works with paper are abstract, sculptural and tactile expressions of how I see. I have always had a passion for the materiality of paper. The potential of that clean sheet. Printmaking was a platform for me to explore this medium but I quickly found that printmaking was quite tight and precise (not me) and I found other ways to use my press that excited me. I found that I could print onto and with other things, so suddenly the options were endless. This was inspirational, playful and an intuitive way to work. Lines particularly excite me. I love the edges of things, the silhouette, the shadow. My practice is a way of making beautiful lines and shadows. I am relieved when the viewer leans in and wants to touch my work. I know I have captured something of our world.
Dior Mahnken
Dior lives in the Sutherland Shire, a bushy and watery environment that often inspires her work. She has a husband and three grown children. Her dog and cat are her companions in her studio. They are comfortable in sharing with Diors collected treasures that others describe as junk.
Dior has travelled extensively to less popular destinations and has heart for the less fortunate. She is a printmaker gone rogue , pushing the boundaries of both press and paper. Her art practice is playful and experimental. Paper, her plaything. Her artworks can be diaphanous and ethereal or earthy and organic. All are unique as she mixes all colours herself. Construction of pieces is done after copious amounts of paper are printed. Her work is meditative and intuitive as it is often in hindsight she can see what the work is referencing.
