Paul Williams
Riverbank 1
Riverbank 1
Paul Williams layers acrylics and mixed media—building up paint and glazes, scraping back to reveal textures and underpainting. His coastal abstractions respond to NSW's ocean moods, rivers and shifting light. Working from his Mosman studio near Middle Harbour, he reshapes coastal elements into new forms.

Artist Statement
These works River Myth 1 and 7 and Riverbank 1 are from a series inspired by the Hawkesbury River, a subject of intense fascination since I was small. Some attributes of the river and its ambient scenery, such as majestic bridges, opaque waters and the sandstone shoreline, have been reshaped into abstractions. High clouds help set the mood.
My work is a response to the ever-changing moods of the ocean, rivers and coastline of New South Wales. I draw inspiration from the shifting light, weather and history of our seaside and places like the Hawkesbury River. I choose attributes of the subject and its ambient scenery. Through a process of intuitive selection and abstraction, I reshape these elements into something new, seeking the hidden narrative beneath the surface. Working primarily in acrylics and mixed media, my journey is layered and exploratory. I build up with layers of paint and glazes and scrape back allowing textures and remnants of underpainting to emerge. These visible traces suggest a history and a memory within the work. I value the "Eureka moment" when something unexpected and beautiful happens, a moment that feels both personal and universal. My hope is that my paintings spark a sense of recognition and enjoyment in lovers of the sea, inviting them to pause, reflect and find their own meaning in the work. Each piece is an invitation to experience the energy, tranquillity, and mystery of the coastal landscape through fresh eyes.
